If you have set out to finally try streaming on Twitch the first question you will be faced with is: do you need OBS to stream on Twitch? Although as implied by the previous statement you do have multiple options, in reality, most of the time the answer you will arrive at is to stream with OBS regardless.

The reason for its popularity is the fact that OBS is a very reliable piece of software that simply does everything you would need it to. You connect your Twitch account to OBS, dial in some settings and KABOOM, you are ready to go!

Now to make sure that the “KABOOM” represents the resounding sound of your success and not the sound of your PC exploding (your PC can’t explode because of OBS even if you tried really hard ) let us go a little bit more in-depth on how to stream on Twitch with OBS, and what would even be the best settings for Twitch.

Luckily, OBS provides a nifty VirtualCam Plugin that you can use to set as a Virtual Webcam that can be picked up by Skype/Zoom or the video software. What we do is we have one instance of OBS streaming the Video and set this as the Virtual Camera 1. The plugin also includes options to add an overlay with a Call-to-action and a chatbot that publishes the “price” of each voice change. The Streamlabs version of OBS is supposed to be simpler, easier to use software catered towards novice streamers and users. The original OBS studio software has all the features SLOBS has and more, being considered the more advanced software made for more advanced users.

The truth is that whichever you choose 99.9% of the settings we will discuss are interchangeable between the software since at their core they are the same.

For this specific guide, we will use OBS Studio to encourage people to not shy away from it just because it is “more advanced”. The biggest advantage of the original OBS Studio for most users, in reality, is the fact that new features are implemented first and only after a while SLOBS ports them to their version of OBS.

Overall, since we are discussing the best settings for Twitch we might as well go for the more “advanced” tool so we can benefit from all the optimizations (as mentioned above any settings discussed here can be used in SLOBS as well).

The OBS Settings You Want to Use

This is it, boys and girls, this is where the magic will happen. Although we have already talked a bit about how to stream on Twitch with OBS and what we would consider the best settings, this article will focus on more in-depth explanations of the settings we will configure.

To get started, navigate to File in the top left corner and select Settings. This will bring up most of the things we will configure in this guide.

Stream

You can honestly ignore the General tab because most settings there are purely preference so we are skipping straight to the important bits.

To connect OBS to Twitch previously you needed to use a stream key, but that is already an obsolete method since you can use the Connect Account feature now.

This will also allow you to use a cool new feature from OBS called Docks which will enable the option of having your Twitch chat and other Twitch tools shown directly in your OBS Studio, so if you ever wondered how to add the Twitch chat to OBS this is how you do it.

To find this option simply navigate to View and then Docks. From there you simply choose which docks you would like to use and place them however you want inside of OBS.

Best Output Settings for OBS

The next tab is called Output and this is probably the most important tab in the software. This is what you will use to get the best OBS settings for Twitch.

We will go step by step and explain what settings do what to make sure this is not confusing.

  1. Make sure to enable Advanced in Output Mode on top of the tab. This way you will see all the options just like in the screenshot.
  2. Select the Streaming tab since this is what we will be focusing on today.
  3. Ignore Audio Track.
  4. The Encoder setting is one of the most important settings in OBS. The options you have are based on your hardware. The quick and easy way is this: Do you have an NVIDIA GPU? Yes = Use NVENC; No=Use x264. The NVENC encoder is extremely efficient but is only present on NVIDIA graphic cards. If you have a Radeon GPU then just use x264 which is dependent on your CPU. It will be more resource-consuming but it will still be better than the jank encoder AMD provides in OBS.
  5. Rescale Output should be ignored since it is very resource consuming.
  6. Rate Control is your bitrate. This is very important when setting up OBS for Twitch because each streaming platform has different server capacities. The value you input also depends on the capacity of your own internet. Both Twitch and NVIDIA provide guidelines for what you should use based on your internet speed and video resolution.

The NVIDIA provided guidelines are meant to be used by the people that have the NVENC encoder provided. If you are using the x264 encoder use the Twitch guidelines as a reference.

To find out what your internet speed is you can use handy services such as Speedtest.

  1. The next settings called Keyframe Interval, Preset, Profile, Look-ahead, Psycho Visual Tuning, and Max B-frames are all dependent on the encoder you chose. Once again, for the x264 encoder reference the settings given by Twitch and for the NVENC settings use the NVIDIA guidelines.

Since I am using the NVENC encoder and I mostly stream fast-paced FPS shooter games I have specifically fine-tuned my settings for those scenarios. If you play Fortnite, Apex Legends, Hyperscape, CS:GO, Rainbow Six Siege, Valorant, or any other game where the camera moves around a lot and you are using the NVENC encoder as well, feel free to simply use the settings from the screenshot.

Best Audio Settings for OBS

The Audio tab has a couple settings we want to make sure are set up properly to ensure no audio issues on stream.

  1. For Sample Rate you can change it to 48 kHz because that is the default Windows setting. Nothing bad happens if you leave it at 44kHz, but since we are discussing the best OBS settings for Twitch you might as well right?
  2. In the Devices panel select your desktop audio source and also select your microphone so OBS has no trouble hearing you, or hearing your desktop sounds such as music, game sounds, etc.
  3. Meters you can leave at default settings. In my case, I decided to use True Peak in the Peak Meter Type option although it is completely unnecessary. It basically gives me a more accurate reading of how loud I actually am (extremely rudimentary explanation of what the setting does, but for most people it is irrelevant).
  4. Finally, you have the Hotkeys options which are self-explanatory. You can designate a specific key to do the action depicted in the tab.

Best Video Settings for OBS

The Video tab is another big variable when discussing how to stream on Twitch with OBS effectively.

As mentioned before the big three factors when deciding on your stream quality are the encoder, bitrate, and video resolution. A simple way to think of it is this: higher resolution = requires higher bitrate = requires more demanding encoder settings. For demanding encoder settings you need a beefy PC or even a dual PC setup, while for higher bitrate you need better internet.

So as with many other settings for the resolution you follow either the Twitch or the NVIDIA guidelines. An important thing to mention is that for high motion games like FPS shooters a lower resolution is recommended so less pixelation because of encoder overload occurs.

  1. Base Canvas Resolution is the resolution of the canvas you use in OBS. As you can see in my screenshot you can match it with the resolution you stream at so you can reduce CPU overload.
  2. Output Scaled Resolution is the resolution Twitch viewers watch you in. As previously stated, the higher resolution the better quality but encoder settings and bitrate must be balanced with this setting as well.
  3. The Downscale Filter option helps in the situation when your Canvas resolution is higher than your Output resolution. The higher the scaling the better the outputted video will look. This process also consumes a bit of CPU so if you want to completely negate its impact set your Canvas and Output values to be the same.
  4. Common FPS Values represent the value you will be streaming in. The most common values are 30 FPS and 60 FPS. 99% of the streams you will watch on Twitch fill fall under that category. There is a little trick though! If in the options you select Integer FPS Value instead of Common Values, you can stream at 120 FPS by dialing that number in!

Why would you want to do that? Well, once again we are talking about the BEST OBS settings for Twitch streamers. If you are an FPS shooter streamer this might be a big change for you. Most FPS games are played on 144Hz monitors nowadays, so to make sure the viewers that do have that option can experience a more fluid stream you can stream at 120 FPS for them. Fair warning though, this does require more resources namely you need to have a stable internet connection that can support using double the bandwidth (60FPS x 2) as well as more CPU+GPU.

To properly see 120FPS streams your viewers must obviously have your stream on a 144 Hz monitor AND have the Hardware Acceleration option enabled in their browsers!!! Otherwise, all that bandwidth and extra CPU+GPU resources are being eaten up for nobody!!!

Hotkeys Settings for OBS

Once again, as the name implies the Hotkeys tab is used to set up specific keys that will allow you to execute certain actions quickly. You can set it up to switch scenes, or turn off your webcam or anything else that would be useful for you.

Advanced OBS Settings

The Advanced tab holds a couple of settings that in my honest opinion should just be left alone. The General and Video settings in the Advanced tab are part of those settings you shouldn’t touch. There are lengthy and technical reasons for both, but I would probably bore you to death so the short version is:

1. Process Priority will not do much outside taking up more resources for OBS which you don’t want.

2. Video settings in the Advanced tab only work if the viewers can actually see the full-color range and space using their current hardware. Otherwise, you are wasting bitrate.

The one setting in Advanced that should be used is Enable network optimizations. This setting will further optimize your bitrate usage resulting in less dropped frames in OBS.

Audio Mixer

An important aspect of setting up OBS Studio for Twitch is audio clarity. Luckily OBS offers a couple of settings that can help improve the audio quality of your stream. Most of these settings are located in the Audio Mixer.

The Audio Mixer itself is a simple interface that shows how loud your desktop audio is and how loud your microphone is. Using the sliders in the Audio Mixer and having a couple of pre-stream recording sessions is necessary to adjust and balance the sound so you can hear the game and commentary clearly.

Aside from that, the Audio Mixer also has some more advanced uses, one of them being the ability to add filters such as noise gates, noise suppression, etc.

The reason for this is the fact that 99.9% of the time your webcam will be the size of a tiny window on the side of the screen so people can see the gameplay. Even if you buy a full 4K professional camera, once you scale it down to 300×300 pixels on the OBS canvas all those extra pixels go to waste.

As with the Audio Mixer, there are some advanced options in OBS to adjust your webcam quality. To find them make sure you have your webcam added as a Video Capture Device in

your sources, then right-click the Video Capture Device and select Configure Video.

Depending on the webcam you have, you will get different granularity in selecting your options, so research a bit and find the best settings for you. The usual tip I would give though is that if you see any options on Auto, you better disable them because as a rule of thumb these Auto options suck.

This means you are not stuck just with some overlays and default transitions, you can endlessly customize your experience with OBS. A couple plugins you should be aware of are:

  • The motion-effect plugin is a great way to step away from basic OBS animations and transitions.
